CHURCHES IN FLORENCE
SANTA MARIA NOVELLA
The Dominican friarsi began to build t he church in 1246 on the site of the 10th-century Dominican oratory of S. Maria delle Vigne. The nave and aisles went up in 1279 and the building was finished in the middle of the 14th century with the campanile and the Sacristy by Jacopo Talenti.
SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE (DUOMO)
The church of Santa Maria del Fiore (better know as the Cathedral) was the result of an architectonic project studied by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296. The Dome was a work of Brunelleschi while the façade was completed in late 1800.
SANTA CROCE
The building of the church started in 1924 according to Arnolfo di Cambio's project but in reality was consacrated in 1443 in the presence of Eugenio IV. The Church was gradually enriched by donations from the rich, florentine families who were allowed.
SAN LORENZO
The oldest church in Florence is the San Lorenzo church. It was consacrated in 393 a.c. by S. Ambrogio and dedicated to Lorenzo martyr; little is left of the church today.
SANTO SPIRITO
In 1444 Brunelleschi started building the church of Santo Spirito and was continued (and finished, in 1487) by Gaiole and Sant'Andrea who followed only in part, the original project of Brunelleschi. The high church steeple was built by Baccio D'Agnolo (1502).
S.S. ANNUNZIATA
The church rises where once there was the oratorio dei Servi di Maria. The church was rebuilt between 1440 and 1481 thanks to Michelozzo who built the first cloister and to Dell'Alberti who made many changes (the circular pulpit).
SAN MINIATO
Thechurch of San Miniato was started in the xi century and is, after the battistery, the best example of the Roman Florentine style. San Marco Michelozzo rebuilt and expanded this convent for Cosimo the Elder, and it still contains the splendid frescoes that Beato Angelico painted to decorate the monks' cells. Inside there is also a beautiful library that Michelozzo designed in 1448; this, the first public library of the Renaissance, contains many fine illuminated manuscripts. S. Margherita street 1 - Phone +39 055 219416

Informations:
In the historical center of florence in '200, there were the houses of the Alighieri between the church of S.Martino and la Dei Donati square. In the first years of '900, the comune of Florence built the House of Dante in the place where Dante was born-according to the tradition.
Here you find the Museum Casa di Dante which is divided in three floors. On the first floor we find documentation regarding Florence of those years, Dante's youth, the public life and his priorship during which he took part in political and military divergences.
On the second floor we find documentation regarding the painful period of his exile (which began in 1301 when Dante was condemned). Dante lived his last years in Ravenna where he died in 1321.
On the third floor we find documentation regarding perfect reproductions of famous works of art realized in '300 and up to today, of famous artists sucm as Giotto, Andrea del Castagno, Il Ghirlandaio, Raffaello and Michelangelo.
Michelangelo Buonarroti's House Memory

Ghibellina street 70 - Phone +39 055 241752

Informations:
The house was built by Michelangelo's great grandchild: in the course of the years many descendants collected works of the artist such as portraits and works dated back to his youth. The Battle of the Centaurs, the beautifu lMadonna della Scala and the Wooden Crucifix of the S. Spirito are a few of the works kept here. There are 22 rooms in which are exhibited architectonical collections, paintings, models, sculptures, frescoes and works in bronze.

Guidi's House of Memory

S. Felice square 8 - Phone: +39 055 354457

Informations:
The Guidi house is exactly the same as when the famous English poets RobertBrowning and Elizabeth Barret Browning lived there in 1847. The Brownings furnismed the house with some valuable pieces of furniture and bought the main part of the paintings and cheaper furniture from Florentine secondmand shops.
Today we can see both the paintings and furniture and the furnishing is similar to that of the '800.
Thewalls and ceilings have been restored in the sitting room with the original colours of the period;the doors and fireplaces are original.
